Northern Syria

A United Nations-backed council tasked with creating a new constitution for the country has chosen to not include a representative of the Kurdish population in Northeast Syria. Thousands of Kurds protested the decision stating they should be included in the discussion for the new constitution. The current committee is 150 people split evenly between the Syrian government, the opposition, and Syrian civil society. While there are Kurdish representatives included in certain sectors, the Kurdish self-governing body that governs 30% of the country says its exclusion is unjust. Protesters marched alongside members of the Kurdish administration in many northeastern Syrian towns holding signs that declared a constitution they did not help draft would not be a constitution they followed. The protesters also believe that the commitment that Kurdish fighters showed in the war against the Islamic State should guarantee them representation at the negotiation table. The UN sidelined the Kurds due to opposition from Turkey who deems the Kurds as a terrorist organization.
