On October 1st, Dutch farmers took to the highways on their tractors to stage a sit-in at The Hague and other heavily trafficked areas of the country. The farmers gathered together to protest that the farming and cattle industry is the biggest producer of nitrogen in The Netherlands. The anger was sparked after a recent report called for inefficient cattle farms to be shut down, many of which are single family-run. Protesters believe that the farming industry is being victimized while the aviation industry is escaping scrutiny in the country, more specifically that in scrambling to meet climate goals the country is unfairly targeting the farming industry. One liberal MP, Tjeerd de Groot, has said that livestock is the main contributor to nitrogen and methane levels in the country calling for the amount of livestock to be halved. Agriculture Minister Carola Schouten promised protesters on Tuesday that their livestock would not be halved as long as she was agriculture minister. Police were present at the main protest at The Hague to keep protesters from moving closer to the seat of power but the event remained largely peaceful.
