Protests have occurred in Israel and Palestine over the past few weeks as Palestinians are raising their voices about the treatment of a detained Palestinian prisoner. Al-Arbid, a Palestinian, has been detained by Israeli forces since September 25th and was admitted into a hospital where there is suspicion that he had been tortured. 300 Palestinians took to the streets in the West Bank to protest the treatment of Al-Arbid and other Palestinians detained by Israeli forces on October 1st, 2019. The protest in the West Bank took a more violent turn when protesters burned tires and hurled stones at Israeli troops that were posted nearby to where the protests occurred. There were also simultaneous protests in Jerusalem where 50 demonstrators were eventually broken up by the police, two of whom were arrested. While the primary anger was directed at the inhumane treatment of the detainees, protesters were also upset by the International Red Cross’s lack of accountability in upholding their mandate of protections of detainees and to keep prisoners from being harmed.
Protests have also been held in the West Bank in the aftermath of President Trump unveiling his “Deal of the Century”, a peace proposal for Israel and Palestine. The Palestinian leadership rejected the deal outright, and said many of the proposed features were insulting. Accordingly, Palestinians held protests in the Gaza Strip organized by the Palestinian Liberation Organization and Hamas, which has governed the territory since 2007. There were also protests held near American and Israeli embassies in other parts of the world in solidarity with the Palestinians.
